Formation of intestinal villi

Reconstructing organs in vitro for studying their functions or for transplantation approaches is of great interest for biomedical applications. Therefore, it is important to understand how these organs are forming in the living organisms and in particular which forces are involved during this process.

In this video, a part of the organ formation of the small intestine, namely how the characteristic villi and crypts arise, is explained based on the work of Shyer et al. (2013). Villi and Crypts are the elevations and valleys of the intestinal wall which increase its surface thus maximize the absorption of nutrients. Watch Mirko's video to learn more about how these structures are forming.
